Iowa Schools Chief Arrested by ICE After 20-Year Fake Citizenship Scam

Progressive Power – Facebook

A former superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district has pleaded guilty to federal charges of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and illegally possessing firearms, exposing vulnerabilities in public hiring processes and sparking widespread scrutiny.

Roberts entered the U.S. from Guyana on a student visa in 1999 and gained work authorization linked to that status. He never obtained lawful permanent residency and faced a final removal order in 2024. Despite this, he rose through administrative roles in various districts, culminating in his July 2023 appointment as superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, which serves about 30,000 students.

The False Citizenship Claim That Enabled Employment

In June 2023, during his hiring by Des Moines Public Schools, Roberts filled out a federal I-9 employment eligibility form. He falsely declared himself a U.S. citizen and submitted a Social Security card and driver’s license, which were accepted under routine procedures. This misrepresentation secured his position in a high-level public role amid his unresolved immigration proceedings.

Dramatic ICE Arrest Shocks the Community

ICE agents sought to detain Roberts on September 26, 2025, in Des Moines. He allegedly fled in a district-provided Jeep Cherokee, abandoning it near woods before his capture. The event caught parents, staff, and students off guard, with many discovering his immigration status via media rather than official channels, amplifying community unease.

Weapons and Cash Found During the Operation

In the abandoned vehicle, agents located a loaded handgun concealed under the driver’s seat in a towel, plus roughly $3,000 in cash. Searches of his home revealed three more firearms: a pistol, rifle, and shotgun. Under his January 2026 plea deal, Roberts agreed to forfeit all four weapons to federal authorities. He faces up to 20 years in prison—five years maximum for the false citizenship claim and 15 for the firearms possession as a non-citizen.

License Revoked and District Fallout

Iowa’s Board of Educational Examiners had issued Roberts an administrator license in 2023, partly relying on his citizenship assertion. Post-arrest and charges, the board revoked it, halting his eligibility for educational leadership in the state and prompting examinations of credential verification methods.

Des Moines officials maintained they knew nothing of his immigration issues during hiring, as he cleared standard paperwork and checks. The district sued the executive search firm involved in October 2025, citing vetting lapses. Other districts, including those in Pennsylvania from his prior roles, considered similar actions against firms that failed to spot issues.

Firearms Case Intensifies School Safety Concerns

The weapons allegations heightened public safety worries, though no threats to students or staff were reported. Discovery of arms in a district vehicle fueled discussions on enhanced checks for weapons access among leaders. Political figures, including Iowa’s governor and congressional members, condemned the oversight, urging better federal verification tools and accountability for districts and contractors.

Budget strains emerged as Des Moines appointed interim leadership amid legal fees, litigation, and disruptions. Families endured mid-year changes to reforms Roberts had led, eroding trust and demanding transparency pledges.

Districts and policymakers now scrutinize I-9 self-attestations for senior hires, advocating federal database integration, advanced background probes, and improved search firm protocols. Roberts’ attorney noted the plea as acceptance of responsibility. Sentencing is set for May 29, 2026, after which deportation likely awaits due to his status and convictions.

The episode highlights risks in public sector vetting, pressing institutions to fortify compliance without barring qualified leaders, while balancing immigration enforcement with educational needs.
