Russia Attacks Poland In ‘Act of War’—8.7M NATO Civilians Ordered Into Shelters

Russia breached NATO airspace by sending drones into Poland early on September 10, 2025, escalating the Ukraine war onto NATO soil and shocking Europe.

Polish forces shot down multiple Russian drones that entered their airspace for the first time, marking the first time a NATO country has directly engaged Russian military equipment since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, “Last night the Polish airspace was violated by a huge number of Russian drones. Those that posed a direct threat were shot down.” The incursion came as Russia launched a major aerial attack on western Ukraine, near the Polish border.

In response, Polish authorities ordered 8.7 million people, almost a quarter of Poland’s population, in Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lubelskie, to stay indoors. The government closed major airports, including Warsaw Chopin, and sent NATO fighter jets to patrol the skies.

Poland’s military described the attack as reckless and said, “During today’s offensive by the Russian Federation aimed at targets in Ukraine, our airspace experienced repeated incursions by drones. Weaponry has been deployed, and services are actively searching for the downed objects.”

The Minister of Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, explained, “More than 10 objects crossed into Polish airspace and those that constituted a risk to Poland’s security were neutralised.” Ground troops raced to recover drone parts, while officials warned locals not to touch any suspicious items due to possible hazardous materials.

The attack coincided with Russian missile and drone strikes in Ukraine. Four major airports, namely: Warsaw Chopin, Lublin, Modlin, and Rzeszów-Jasionka, were closed to support military operations. Prime Minister Tusk frequently contacted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as air defense units and allied F-35 jets helped intercept the drones.

Tusk confirmed, “An operation is underway in response to multiple violations of Polish airspace.”

Global reaction was swift and intense. U.S. Representative Joe Wilson called it “an act of war,” saying, “Russia is attacking NATO ally Poland… This is an act of war, and we are grateful to NATO allies for their swift response. I urge mandatory sanctions to bankrupt the Russian war machine and arm Ukraine with weapons capable of striking Russia.”

Ukraine’s President Zelenskiy highlighted how serious this was: “At least eight strike drones targeting Poland. This is a perilous precedent for Europe. A strong response is needed from all: Ukraine, Poland, all Europeans, and the United States.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for neighboring countries to intercept any threats to shared security. Russia’s Ministry of Defense responded with threats, declaring, “There is no immunity for anyone anymore, and everyone who supports Zelensky’s regime will pay the price.”

As Poland’s military stayed on full alert, Europe watched nervously for signs of further attacks, knowing the line between provocation and all-out war had become dangerously thin.
