6.6M-Ton Russian Fuel Hub Burns After Ukrainian Strike on Oil Refinery

Flames erupted at an oil refinery in southern Russia moments after midnight on New Year’s Day, as Ukrainian drones pierced deep into the country, illuminating the sky with fireballs amid rushing emergency teams.

The attack targeted the Ilsky refinery in Krasnodar Krai, a facility processing 6.6 million tons of crude oil annually and central to southern fuel supplies. Verified videos captured large sections ablaze, marking one of the campaign’s most significant strikes. This incident launched a broader barrage across multiple regions, from Tatarstan to occupied Donetsk Oblast.

Drone Onslaught Across Regions

Between December 31 and January 1, Ukraine unleashed coordinated drone strikes on oil facilities, fuel depots, and military sites. Fires broke out at an oil preparation plant in Tatarstan’s Republic, while in Russian-occupied Donetsk, a fuel and lubricants depot for the 51st Army burned near Ilovaisk. A Shahed-type drone storage site in Donetsk city also sustained hits.

Kaluga Oblast saw damage to additional fuel storage, underscoring the operation’s scope. Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the Ilsky strike, framing these as targeted efforts to disrupt war-sustaining infrastructure.

Refinery Campaign Intensifies

Ukraine’s assaults on Russian refineries have ramped up since early 2024, reaching peak activity by late 2025. Open-source trackers note repeated strikes on key sites, shifting from isolated hits to systematic pressure on energy assets. Southern facilities linked to Black Sea operations have faced ongoing attacks. December 2025 recorded the highest monthly total of such strikes since the war’s start, eroding capacity and forcing supply reroutes. The New Year’s assault extended this momentum into 2026.

Deep Strikes Expose Vulnerabilities

Drones now reach targets hundreds of kilometers inside Russia, hitting refineries, depots, drone stores, and air defenses once deemed secure. Analysts call it an “infrastructure offensive” to throttle logistics without direct frontline clashes. Russian defenses claimed to intercept dozens of drones, but fires still ignited at vital points. Regional filming bans followed, signaling concern over visible impacts. Prior Ilsky attacks revealed gaps in protecting rear assets despite multi-layered systems.

Ilsky’s Strategic Role

Located in Krasnodar Krai, a hub for southern fuel logistics including Black Sea routes, Ilsky produces aviation kerosene, jet fuel, naphtha, and fuel oil essential for military aircraft and fleet operations. Explosions scattered debris, triggering air-raid alerts that interrupted local celebrations. Emergency responders contained the blaze swiftly, with no immediate casualties reported. Workers followed evacuation protocols, as in past incidents. Partial shutdowns at such plants ripple through supply chains, complicating military sustainment.

Logistics Strain Mounts

Russia has rushed repairs and dispersed storage after earlier strikes, but repetition hinders recovery. Inspections and fixes often span weeks, prompting crude and product rerouting amid strained networks. Cumulative hits pressure alternative refineries, many already targeted. Enhanced defenses and export adjustments loom, yet persistent drone threats test their viability, particularly for Black Sea-linked forces.

Ongoing Infrastructure Pressure

These strikes form part of Ukraine’s push to diminish Russia’s military and economic output. By igniting Ilsky at the year’s start, Kyiv affirmed the campaign’s acceleration. As drones routinely breach rear defenses, the contest over fuel supplies—and the conflict they enable—persists without respite, with implications for operational endurance on both sides.
